Finding Focus and Intention: Lessons from "Keep Going" and Building Better Habits

Wendyy Nguyen

This month, I finished reading the "Steal Like an Artist" trilogy by Austin Kleon and loved the last book, "Keep Going." There was a closing statement that I thought I'd share because I loved it so much.

"Whenever life gets overwhelming, think about your days. Try your best to fill them in ways that get you closer to where you want to be. Go easy on yourself and take your time. Worry less about getting things done. Worry more about things worth doing. Worry less about being a great artist. Worry more about being a good human being who makes art. Worry less about making a mark. Worry more about leaving things better than you found them."

I find it a reminder to be more intentional with how we spend our time, to take things slow, and to be gentler and more compassionate with ourselves. I also started reading "Atomic Habits" by James Clear and am really enjoying it so far. Lately, I've been trying to be more intentional about where I put my energy and focus, both externally and internally. Our biggest asset is our attention, which is why there are so many distractions these days.

A few years ago, I was listening to a podcast with Adam Alter, and he mentioned that if you compounded the amount of time an average person spends on their phone, it would be the equivalent of 10-20 years.

With that in mind, I wanted to cut down the time I spend on my phone or being distracted and build healthier and more rewarding habits in my day-to-day life. I've noticed that if I have small pockets of time available, like less than 30 minutes, I'll usually pick up my phone. This habit accumulates, and before I know it, I've spent 2-3 hours on my phone by the end of the day. I've been trying to harness the power of 15 minutes and use those small pockets to do something that gets me closer to where I want to be and is more fulfilling. Are you also working through the same thing? Let me know! I am currently using this Habit Tracker template to build good habits slowly. If you would like a copy, click here.
