Studio Notes: Gentle Persistence

Hi friends,

Happy August! I hope this month has been gentle for you. Here in Australia, August marks the end of winter, and I’m so excited to step into spring and watch the flowers begin to bloom.

This past month has been a real teacher for me. I’ve been unwell for most of August, which slowed me down quite a bit. In fact, I’m finishing this newsletter from bed—which is very unlike me. At times, it made me worry that I’d lost my drive and motivation. Even when I painted, it didn’t bring me the same joy and energy it usually does.

But despite moving slower, I kept showing up—for my stationery designs, paintings, commissions, and all the little behind-the-scenes pieces that keep my business running. I also made space to care for my body through stretching, workouts, and running.

This reminded me that motivation and mood can be unreliable. We don’t always feel like it—but discipline, persistence and showing up anyway can build the deepest kind of strength and confidence. At the same time, I’ve had to practice being gentle with myself, allowing rest when I need it. It feels a bit like feeling the fear and doing it anyway. I’m proud that I kept my promises to myself, even on the harder days.

What’s something you show up for every day, even when you don’t feel like it?
